The IIHS Library is central to the institution’s mission to build a research, knowledge, and teaching hub focused on India’s urbanisation. It aims to be the largest reference library on urbanisation in South Asia, providing a range of resources and services to support researchers and practitioners studying urban processes and transitions in developing countries.
At Bangalore City Campus, the IIHS Library is a repository of over 11,860 books, over 1,120 CDs and DVDs, 610 cartographic materials, 76 print journals and magazines, 52 case studies, 455 bound volumes of journal back issues in addition to on and off-campus access to over 6480 e-journals across disciplines. Additional research and learning materials include cartographic materials, case studies, audio visual materials, and data. The Library offers extensive access to the latest academic work through wide ranging and inter-disciplinary journal subscriptions. It is a participating institute with JSTOR, and subscribes to EBSCO’s EconLit with Full Text, Social Sciences Full Text, Web of Science, OECD iLibrary, Urban, Rural and Regional Development module and Manupatra databases for social science literature and legal information. In addition, it subscribes to 75 individual and independent journals, both domestic and international, pertaining to cities.
The IIHS Library also houses a Data Library that accesses and archives the most up-to-date socio-economic data available in India related to urbanisation. In addition to archiving and publishing data from public data sources such as the Census and NSS, the Data Library also subscribes to a number of databases such as the Centre for Monitoring the Indian Economy, IndiaStat, and the EPW Research Foundation.
Through a series of thematic monthly exhibitions of books, maps, and movies, and public events such as book launches and talks, the Library furthers its core knowledge functions at IIHS and in the wider community. The Library provides a range of services including reference services, research and teaching support, and circulation services. Equipped with computers for users’ access and teaching aids such as Prezi, EndNote, Mendeley, STATA and Turnitin, the IIHS Library supports the research and teaching needs of the faculty and learners through a range of services.
