Yes, the IIHS Library is open to the public. Library resources can be accessed only within the IIHS premises for visitors.

Academic, Research and Practice publications for which IIHS has the copyright are available on the Knowledge Gateway, can be accessed here.

The IIHS hosts a series of regular public interactions ranging from academic conferences, seminars and talks to film screenings, discussions, performances, and exhibitions. Many of these come under two curated series of events called Publics@IIHS and CityScripts and for the past events see here:  To attend our future events, send us an email to add you in our emailer list to library@iihs.ac.in.

External Membership

Members and visitors are allowed anytime to visit the Library during the working hours, walk-ins are allowed for reference at no charges. However, library membership is required to borrow resources.

No. For the visiting public no free Wi-Fi is provided. However, the public visitors are permitted to use their laptops inside the Library.

The Library Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) is available to search here by author, title, subject and also with advanced search features like language, year and publisher. The OPAC can be used to search books, journals, films, CD-ROMs, maps and case studies, which are physically available in Library.

Access to most e-resources is restricted to current IIHS faculty, learners and staff.

No. Our current licensing does not permit us to provide remote access to e-resources to external members. Electronic journals and databases can be viewed online free of cost at the IIHS Library premises in the public computers, but no downloading and transferring of subscribed content is permissible. However, print articles are available at a cost of Rs.1.00/- per page.

In the case of loss of Library ID card, Rs.350 will be charged for reissue. The filled in membership form along with a passport size photograph, identity card (photocopy) and the DD/Cheque payable to Indian Institute for Human Settlements, payable at Bengaluru should be given at the address below:

If an item is available in the Library it cannot be reserved, only items that are on loan can be reserved. Ask the Library staff at the counter or send an email for reservations.

Once you get the reminder or overdue notices from the library you can reply to that email for renewing the materials you have loaned.  Users are not required to bring the books for renewal to the Library, as it can be done by phone or email.  For the renewals, send an email to library@iihs.ac.in or call at 080-67606666 Exn. 661

Internal Users

For the internal Staff Library Circulation Policy, ask the Library helpdesk at library@iihs.ac.in. or by phone: 080 -6760 6666 Exn. 661, applicable to full-time staff members, learners, interns, visiting scholars and external consultants.

If you are in the IIHS Bengaluru City Campus, you can access electronic resources from any computer and if you are off campus, you need to have a Virtual Private Network (VPN) installed on your computer, which allows authorised users to access the subscribed resources remotely after authentication. Write to the IT help desk at itsupport@iihs.ac.in to get the VPN software installed on your computer.

For the list of journals we have subscribed to covered see here. IIHS Library subscribes to 30 print and electronic journals, including 3,000 e-journals accessible through JSTOR Primary Sources of archive collections in Arts and Sciences, Business, Public Health, and Sustainability journals.

The IIHS Library has access to a few databases of which one category deals with Demography, Social and Economic Indicators and other with Law. To see them click here.

If you are signed on in the Library OPAC, you can find the Purchase Suggestion form to fill in the book suggestion details. Alternatively, please do send an email with a line of justification to library@iihs.ac.in

The Library’s reference query form helps its staff understand the user’s project/research requirements. Based on this understanding, the Library staff responds within 48 hours with a reference pack consisting of News, Research Articles, Reports and Books published in the area of interest. Users can send their request to the Library Staff through email: library@iihs.ac.in
